REVIEW/RANT:
In an industry which is all about profit and returns, second chances are rare. This is certainly Ritchie’s last chance.
Obviously when I went to see Rock n Rolla I was not expecting a masterpiece. But since Ritchie was now on familiar ground I nostalgically thought he would be able entertain me like he used to when I was a young, naïve and rather spotty teenager. The problem is that he is on too familiar ground. Once again he has remade Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Here Londoners with stereotypical voices and no real names; One Two, Mumbles, Tank etc. take proceedings and not a single one is believable or threatening. The gang ‘The Wild Bunch’ have no real chemistry, comradeship or banter. I am a great fan of the very talented Tom Wilkinson but here his impression of Bob Hoskins throughout is wincingly irritating.
Rock n Rolla is an attempt at remaking The Long Good Friday in a modern day context but to no avail. Ritchie’s script is nowhere near as witty as it thinks it is as all the jokes are based around homophobia and his desperate attempts at punch lines fall flat on their face.
Basically the best way to describe Ritchie’s direction is ‘flashy with no substance’. He should go back to music video direction where he started as this seems to be his true calling. Perhaps he should do a new video for the subways as the song ‘Rock n Roll Queen’ is played annoyingly too often.
Whereas the plot in Lock Stock was well structured and consistent the narrative here has too many different inconsistent storylines and is very confused. Ritchie had one entertaining film in him and people are starting to cotton on to the fact he is simply rehashing the same concept every time.
It is worth mentioning that Ritchie’s old producer Micheal Vaughn has gone onto great success with Layer Cake, Stardust and the opportunity to direct X-Men 3. Perhaps this was where the real talent lied. Ever since they stopped collaborating Ritchie’s work has desperately declined whilst Vaughn’s status has reached dizzying heights. It is also reported that Vaughn would take over direction duties when Ritchie couldn’t be bothered turning up for work.
As the credits arrive Ritchie advertises his planned sequel; The Real Rock n Rolla. Although such a film will not be made if this feature does not make enough money. Please do not put your hand in your pocket to fund this abomination. Unfunny, rubbish and unimaginative action proves he is only interested in the money. Help me prove to him that the movie going public are not stupid and make this fail.

TO SUM UP:
Let’s make no bones about it, Ritchie is not a skilled filmmaker. He made a sparkling humorous debut and a solid second film which was more or less the same but it had just enough minor differences to get away with it. Three flops in a row, he has well and truly sold out!

your opinion appears to comr from someone who lacks experience in movie production,
Ah you are 100% correct my misspelling friend!
Any reason in particular why you think this is relevant?
I get that it is a bit predictable but it is definetly not a bad film. The jokes and conversations were alot better than most of the recent films I have seen. Sure it wasn't Shakespear but its not often that you get humor and action along with a decent script. I think the reason you don't like this film is because you're expecting Gone With the Wind from a film called ROCKN' ROLLA'.
Too many storylines? Are you five? The best part about this movie is that each individual plot influences another and they all mesh together in the end. Seriously though, how hard is it to follow? Every scene is based off of an event from the last group of people. As for the predictable gunslinger crap, THIS IS AN ACTION-COMEDY! What else do you want from it? In fact, they did well seeing as they didn't focus on sex as much as almost every other movie does. I know you have a right to your opinion but now you're just being nit-picky.
your a clown, this is one of the best films i've seen recently, and you look like an emo faggot.
this film is superb, you dont have a clue what you are talking about! cant wait for the real rocknrolla!
I liked that movie as well as Revolver as well as Layer cake as well as Trainspotting as well as well as smoking aces.
In the end action movies are action movies but this one has some kind of funny scenario that links all events together. It goes on and on and on...
IMO, Brits come out with better movies than Hollywood.

I agree everyone in that this movie was well made but whats with all the personal insults? What does it matter what he looks like? Keep critiquing man, don't take anything personally.
i am led to beleive ur judgement isnt a good one
bring on the real rock and rolla
and to be honest ur review gives the impression which just indicates bed wetter
get back to ur coldplay cd and ur films such as the notebook etc

i watched this the other day, loved it and thought Handsome Bob was one of the most original, refreshing and real gay characters ever seen in a movie... onetwo is how many straight men are you know so you shouldn't be so touchy and cry 'homophobe'... it's way too obvious and screams victim.
At the end of the day, you got to look at your watch and realize if you wasted two hours of your time watching a movie. From my point of view, i did not see the time while the movie was goin on... I personaly practice the famous Archie slap, not because i'm violent, not because this is what i like in general but because the movie actually took the time to explain to us the feelings drawn within the person receiving it, and this my friend happened in a lot of scenes in the movie. I beleive this movie should never be seen only once for it is impossible to enjoy it to its full potential, on that note... see you for the real rock n rolla...
ur a faggot ben!!!
Your summation at the end of the review does not work. You say he made a sparkling and humorous first film and a solid second, and then claim he has made 3 flops.
Hi Ben, just read your comments and totally disagree. Thought the film was great, better than lock stock, but thats my opinion. Thought Johnny Quid was an awsome character, and i cant wait for the sequel. Ive became a big fan of Guy Richie because of this Movie.
Ben you seem more interested on pointing out other peoples spellings than what there saying to, maybe this movie is to much for an up his own arse toff student numpty like yourself. Your obviously not a real Rock'n'Rolla lol, Good day to you sir :)

I didn't like this as much as the first two (LS&TSB and Snatch); and I think Layer Cake has a more intriguing story line, is better made and reminiscent of the aforementioned two. I was hoping for more black humor, more blood - just more from Rock and Rolla. That said, I do think this movie was worth the rental fee (DVD) -and while I wouldn't have paid to see it in a theater, it was none-the-less entertaining and I enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing the sequels. Hell, most anything beats the crap Hollywood puts out.
I'll give it a 6.5 out of 10.
this film was quality, richie has found a hole in the market with his own brand of crime comedies. You seem to just not like guy richie, or this genre. If you really think lock stock, snatch and rock 'n' rolla are simlar then you shouldn't write about films. Similar why? because they all have the same 'accent'...grow up. You have massivley missed the attraction of these kinds of films, dont write about stuff you don't understand. I will not be coming back to this webpage.
Absolutely great film loved it can't wait for the second
I thought the movie was very entertaining. The reason people like it is because it IS very much like Lock Stock... & Snatch. These types of films--where there are many separate plots under one theme which come together in the end--seem to be Guy Ritchies' strong suit. His failures are films which stray from this formula. If he sticks with a proven formula, he will keep entertaining people who are looking for films which are more entertaining than the run-of-the-mill, special effect laden Hollywood blockbusters. I would also like to add that I only enjoyed the three films I mentioned. In my opinion, Revolver was a very poorly edited and disjointed film. The best part of the film was shown during the end credits--it also provided an explanation of the film itself. If you have to wait til the end credits to understand the film you just watched, it is a bad film. I admit that Guy Ritchie is a one dimensional director, but he is a master of this type of story-telling; and you would do him a disservice by discounting it. It would be akin to saying that Martin Scorcese should quit making gangster films because that's all he's good at. Say what you will, but I would put Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch against Scarface and Goodfellas any day of the week. I understand they are different types of cinematic genres; but the direction, casting, acting, and chemistry are second to none in all of these films.
Ben your are a fucking faggot!!!! You seriously think this movie is not worth a sequal. You know nothing about movies!!!!!!!! Nothing. this movie is genius!! And to understand it you need to concentrate. By the look of you, you need to take you hand off your cock and realize it's not a Porno. There are no boobs. Faggot!
You are a total prat how can you put down rock and rolla it is a class film it's funny there's action totally entertaining for every man who is into these sort ov films shut up and moan about sumink else you actually no wat your on about cause clearly you ain't got a clue mate. Ur a bell end. GEEK.
